Last season, while Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice were generally an excellent double pivot, the Gunners did have issues at times in the middle of the park.

Most notably, when Zubimendi and Rice endured periods of fatigue, Arsenal struggled to break the press. Both players tensed up and turned away from playing penetrative passes in between the lines. They became conservative in their decision-making on the ball in deep areas, and that meant Arteta's side often struggle to break through the first line of pressure.

Guimaraes is one of the best passers and press-resistant players in the Premier League. He's outstanding at receiving the ball with his ball to goal, turning a man and playing a forward pass.

This is probably his standout attribute and the primary skill he'll bring to the Gunners' game that they were lacking, although he'll also offer dogged defensive work and an ability to break into the box, as well as, crucially, the ability for Arteta to rest Rice from time to time.
