Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was a star player for Arsenal who helped them win the FA Cup three times. He then moved on to Liverpool, where he won the Premier League and the Champions League. Most recently, he has been with Besiktas, but he is now a free agent.
Oxlade-Chamberlain maintained a great relationship with his former Gunners teammate and now academy manager, Per Mertesacker. This came to be a useful contact for Oxlade-Chamberlain as he is now training with the Gunners' U21s.
He played for the U21s alongside Gabriel Jesus in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Manchester United's U21s. Oxlade-Chamberlain has been very impressed with the Brazilian.
The former Arsenal midfielder told The Athletic, "What a player he is! I’ve played against him many times, but just seeing how he trains, the way he works, how sharp his finishing is, he’s really impressive."
Jesus is yet to play for Arsenal's first team this season as he recovers from a cruciate ligament tear. He recently made the bench in fixtures against Chelsea and Brentford. However, he was not involved in their recent Premier League loss to Aston Villa.
Could Gabriel Jesus play a key role for Arsenal this season?
Viktor Gyokeres is yet to live up to the level he set himself at Sporting CP last season. Mikel Merino has had to fill in as a makeshift center-forward once again. Whilst Kai Havertz has been out since the opening day of the Premier League season with a knee injury.
Arsenal's mixed form recently has led to their lead at the top of the Premier League being reduced to just two points. Manchester City are hot on their heels, whilst Villa could also be dark horses for the title.
Oxlade-Chamberlain played with some great strikers during his time at Arsenal. This included Robin van Persie, Thierry Henry, and Olivier Giroud. Therefore, it is high praise that he has ramped on Jesus.
Jesus is only 28, but his injury record has not been great in recent campaigns. His contract with the Gunners expires in 2027, and he has already been linked with moves back to Brazil and the Saudi Pro League.
Despite this, Jesus could still play a key role for Arsenal this season, especially if Gyokeres, Merino, or Havertz are not firing. The Gunners are desperate to win the Premier League, and Jesus' experience of winning four with City will also come in handy.
