Gary Neville has just switched from being a staunch critic in Red Devil robes to becoming the “biggest supporter” of Arsenal Football Club – who saw that coming?

It all stems from Mikel Arteta. Not content with the marginal gains that led the Gunners to Premier League glory, the boss now wants to win the media over and took his first steps towards it when he sat down with Ian Wright and Neville on the Overlap.

Joined by Co-Chair Josh Kroenke, they gave the Manchester United legend a 2025/26 Arsenal home jersey bearing his name, shirt number and a short message signed off by Arteta himself: “To Gary, our biggest supporter”.

The joke is not lost on anyone, as Neville was often one to criticise the club in recent years. His most well-known remarks include “I don’t know the plan at Arsenal… I don’t get the strategy” after the 2-0 loss at Brentford in August 2021 while, in April 2022, he stated that a fourth-place finish would be as "good as it gets” for Arteta at N5.

In his defence, many an Arsenal fan doubted both the boss and the club early on in their process and Neville did hype up Arteta back then as a “really talented young manager”, even if he did not always trust the Spaniard’s higher-ups to deliver for him.

But his choice words on the process/lack of direction – something which was clear to see regardless of whether or not one believed in it – rankled with fans who were keen for outsiders like Neville and co. to recognise the rise of their sleeping giant, especially after so many years of ‘banter era’ ridicule and torment.

This gift offers a touch of humour, mocking those who could not see a title-winning rebuild take place before their very eyes; Neville saw the funny side of it, and he is just one man left eating humble pie after the triumphant 2025/26 campaign.

Arteta and Kroenke had the last laugh.
