A striker was seen as the missing piece between Arsenal being runners-up and title winners in the Premier League. Viktor Gyökeres, who arrived from Sporting CP, was seen as the man to fire the Gunners to league victory.
Arsenal are top of the league, but again dropped points to extend their lead last weekend, drawing 0-0 with relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest. When the Gunners fire a blank, the blame will inevitably fall on Gyökeres, who has now not scored in his last five league games.
Gyökeres was never going to score as many goals as he did in the Portuguese league in English soccer's top flight. His return of just eight goals, with one assist in 26 games in all competitions, is disappointing. However, the Gunners have another forward with a worse record.
When Eberechi Eze signed for Arsenal, he already became a hero as he joined the club. He was set to sign for Tottenham Hotspur, but the Gunners stole the player from under their biggest rivals' noses.
Is Eberechi Eze Arsenal's worst signing this season?
Eze is an attacking midfielder, while Gyökeres is a striker, so he is not expected to score as many goals as the Swede. However, the former Crystal Palace player has scored just five goals with four assists in 25 matches for the Gunners in all competitions this season.
Three of Eze's goals came in the same match, when he bagged a hat-trick against Tottenham. This was a great moment for the Arsenal academy player who was released. However, that match was the last time he had a goal involvement in the Premier League.
Eze was also left on the bench for four successive league games before making substitute appearances against Liverpool and then Forest. It was always going to be difficult for Eze to establish himself as a starter for the Gunners, as he is competing directly with the club captain, Martin Ødegaard, for a starting place in the attacking midfield role.
Eze has also been used on the left wing and in central midfield this season, but is still struggling for game time. He was a big fish in a small pond at Palace, but his lack of game time at the Emirates Stadium is a concern.
With the World Cup just around the corner, Eze needs game time. His England record has been good recently, with two goals in the Three Lions' last three World Cup qualifiers. Eze's ability to take on a player will make him very useful in tournament soccer. However, Thomas Tuchel will still find it hard to take him to North America if his record with the Gunners does not improve.
