Arsenal have been heavily linked with Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United recently. The Gunners are reportedly willing to pay up to £60 million for the Brazilian. His value will be debated by supporters, so we are going to compare him against similarly priced midfielders.

Why Bruno Guimaraes is being valued at £60 million by Arsenal

If Bruno Guimaraes were younger and tied down to a longer contract, then he would be valued much more than £60 million. However, he is 28 and has just two years left on his contract at Newcastle.

There is no release clause in his contract, as one for £100 million expired in 2024. Any deal will now have to be accepted by Newcastle. The Magpies will be reluctant to let him go given his importance to the team and popularity amongst their supporters. They have also already let his midfield partner, Sandro Tonali, join Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Guimaraes has starred for Newcastle in the Premier League since he joined them from Olympique Lyonnais in 2022 for £40 million.

What Bruno Guimaraes would bring to Arsenal

The midfielder favors playing in a defensive role, which would make him a perfect partner for Declan Rice. Guimaraes would allow Rice to get forward more often and contribute to attacks. The Brazilian would likely start ahead of Martin Zubimendi, which would leave Christian Norgaard surplus to requirements. Guimaraes' ability to win the ball and dictate play would make him a perfect fit for a midfield three alongside Rice and Odegaard.

Guimaraes' strengths:

  • Winning the ball
  • Progressive passing
  • Driving the ball forwards
  • High work rate
  • Strong physically

Guimaraes is much older than most of the players in the table. This is why the amount Arsenal are reportedly willing to pay is around the £60 million mark. Otherwise, Newcastle could command a fee of around what they sold Tonali for.

The truth is that not all of these players listed have lived up to their price tag. Mount's time at Manchester United has been disrupted by injuries, and Lavia has been a flop at Chelsea. Szoboszlai has been a good, versatile option for Liverpool, and so has Nunes at City. It remains to be seen if Tonali will live up to expectations at Spurs.

How his stats compare

Rodri is the best defensive midfielder in the world, so it is no surprise that his stats are better. It is interested comparing Zubimendi's chances created with Guimaraes'. He may have to get used to a more disciplined role if he is to join Arsenal.

The risks of a £60 million deal

£60 million is a relatively low fee compared to modern standards. Tonali has just gone for £100 million, and Elliot Anderson has joined Manchester City from Nottingham Forest for £116 million.

As Guimaraes will turn 29 next season, there will likely be little or no resale value on the player. His wages will be around the £160, 000 mark. At Newcastle, he is allowed to get forward. However, with Arsenal he may have to be more disciplined.

Norgaard flourished for Brentford, but did not adapt to Arsenal's system and was frozen out. Guimaraes will be competing with Zubimendi for a starting spot. The Spanish midfielder has just helped them win the league, so there will be pressure on Guimaraes to better Zubimendi's performances.

Guimaraes has little history of injuries, but did miss 14 games for Newcastle and Brazil last season with a hamstring problem. He also survived the campaign without a suspension.

Is Bruno Guimaraes worth £60 million?

The price tag for Guimaraes of £60 million would be good value in today's market. Should Newcastle accept, then it would be great business for the Gunners. Arsenal may have just won the Premier League, but still need to strengthen if they are to defend their title.
