Arsenal have approached Newcastle United about signing Bruno Guimaraes. However, the Magpies say that their star midfielder is not for sale.
According to The Athletic, "The proposal, which was communicated to Newcastle through intermediaries, was worth less than £60million and has been rebuffed by the north east club. Newcastle insist they will not entertain offers for the 28-year-old Brazilian."
Many fans will think the amount bid was too low for Guimaraes. This is especially as Nottingham Forest have reportedly just agreed a fee to sell Elliot Anderson to Manchester City for £130 million.
It may be that Newcastle just wants to drive their price up for Guimaraes. They would want to make more of a profit on the £40 million they paid to Olympique Lyonnais for his services. Despite being backed by the Public Investment Fund, Newcastle still needs to abide by the Premier League's profitability and sustainability regulations too.
Do Arsenal really need Bruno Guimaraes?
There is no doubt that Guimaraes is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. However, Arsenal already has a midfield duo of Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi. It would appear that Guimaraes would be brought in to compete with Zubimendi. However, Zubimendi just had a fantastic season helping Arsenal win the Premier League and get to the Champions League final.
Mikel Merino and left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly can also perform in the defensive midfield role for Arsenal. Christian Norgaard has played very little for Arsenal since he arrived at the club from Brentford, and should be looking to leave the club.
Arsenal will have alternatives to Guimaraes. They could poach Sandro Tonali from the Magpies instead. This would anger Tottenham Hotspur fans, as he has been linked with them recently. The Gunners made a similar move when hijacking Spurs' bid to sign Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace last year.
It may also be worth Arsenal looking to sign a younger defensive midfielder. Ayyoub Bouaddi of Lille is only 18 and already one of the most up-and-coming players in the position in Europe. The Morocco international is being linked with all the top clubs, including Real Madrid. Other midfielders Arsenal have been linked with include Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund and AS Roma's Manu Koné. Signing Mateus Fernandes from relegated West Ham United could also be an option.
Mikel Arteta will be keen to strengthen his roster as they prepare to defend their Premier League title. However, they must learn from Liverpool last season that spending big does not always improve fortunes. The Reds spent £446 million last summer on big names such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz. However, they had a dismal attempt at defending the title and ended up finishing fifth.
