Illan Meslier is surprisingly set to join Arsenal, and he is, of course, expected to be a backup option. David Raya is Arsenal's first choice, as he has just been their Premier League title-winning goalkeeper. Kepa Arrizabalaga is also still at the club, which gives Mikel Arteta options should anything happen to Raya. They also have the youngster Tommy Setford coming through the ranks.
Arsenal goalkeeping depth chart
1. David Raya
Despite him not being Spain's first-choice keeper, Raya is regarded as one of the best in the world. Unai Simón is Luis de la Fuente's preference in goal for Spain. This is due to Simón not letting him down and being their starting keeper when they won Euro 2024.
Raya has just 13 caps for Spain, but it is on the club scene where he has really excelled. The keeper had a modest background playing for Blackburn Rovers, Southport, and Brentford before joining the Gunners.
It was an unpopular decision when Raya was brought in to replace Aaron Ramsdale. However, Arteta's decision has been proved right. Raya conceded just 26 goals and kept 19 clean sheets in 37 Premier League games last season.
The only league game that Raya missed last season was when he was rested ahead of the Champions League final. Arrizabalaga played in goal against Crystal Palace before the Gunners lifted the Premier League trophy.
2. Kepa Arrizabalaga
Arrizabalaga was Arsenal's cup goalkeeper last season. He played every round of both the FA Cup and EFL Cup for the Gunners. They reached the FA Cup final before losing to Manchester City. In the EFL Cup, the Gunners went out to Southampton in the quarter-finals.
The Spaniard also played once in both the Premier League and the Champions League for the Gunners. He was once considered one of the best keepers in the world and had spells at both Chelsea and Real Madrid.
His lack of game time at Arsenal could lead to a transfer away. Arrizabalaga is only 31, which is relatively young for a keeper. He has recently been linked with a move to Napoli.
3. Illan Meslier
Speculation about Arrizabalaga's future could be why Meslier is being brought in. He has just been released by Leeds United after a Premier League campaign where he did not feature. Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow played instead of him.
Meslier can feel harshly treated by Leeds as he was their keeper for two Championship titles. During the 2024/25 Championship campaign, he kept 21 clean sheets and conceded just 27 goals in 39 games as Leeds secured promotion back to the Premier League.
In the season just passed, he was limited to just two Premier League 2 appearances for Leeds' Under-21s. Meslier is only 26 and will arrive at Arsenal on a free transfer. He is now a bit of an unknown quantity after a campaign without first-team soccer.
4. Tommy Setford
Arsenal's up-and-coming keeper is Tommy Setford. He is just 20 and represents England's Under-21s. He was born in the Netherlands and qualifies to play for the Three Lions through his father. Setford was with Ajax before joining Arsenal's academy in 2024.
Setford has been on the bench for Arsenal in both the Champions League and the Premier League. He also has two first-team appearances in cup matches. He played 90 minutes as the Gunners defeated Preston North End 3-0 in the fourth round of the EFL Cup in the 2024/25 season.
Last season, he made a late cameo appearance to replace Arrizabalaga in a 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup. In the campaign just gone, he also played for Arsenal's U21s. He kept four clean sheets and conceded eight goals in eight Premier League 2 games.
Setford is one for the future for the Gunners. Perhaps more game time in either domestic cup competition could come for him next season.
