Martin Odegaard captained Arsenal to the Premier League title last season. However, he did miss many games due to injury. He is already starting to prove doubters wrong at the World Cup.
Odegaard set up Leo Ostigard's goal as Norway defeated Iraq 4-1. Manchester City's Erling Haaland scored a brace in the game, and the Norwegians are starting to be considered as a dark horse for the tournament.
In Odegaard and Haaland, Norway has two stars of the Premier League. However, it remains to be seen how far they can go in the tournament as a collective. They will soon have to face far tougher opposition than Iraq, as they have Senegal and France in their group.
The Arsenal captain can use this tournament as a way to remind Gunners fans of his talents. Last season for the Gunners, he scored just once and made seven assists in 36 games in all competitions.
Odegaard helped the Gunners win the Premier League and get to the Champions League final. However, his individual numbers were not great. The problem that he had was that he could not stay fit.
Martin Odegaard is on the back of a disappointing campaign from an individual perspective
The midfielder suffered from shoulder, knee, and muscle problems throughout the campaign. However, he still performed when it mattered. Odegaard notably set up Leandro Trossard's winner in a 1-0 crucial win over West Ham United at the back end of the season.
Odegaard is now 27, but it feels like he has been around for much longer. This is because he burst onto the scene early when signing for Real Madrid at the age of just 16. There would have been huge pressure on the Norwegian at such a young age.
Often, players who are teen sensations end up burning out and not living up to expectations. This could have happened to Odegaard as he was sent on loan to Heerenveen, Vitesse, Real Sociedad, and Arsenal.
Odegaard avoided becoming a journeyman as he joined the Gunners permanently in 2021. He now has a Premier League title to show for his efforts. However, he still needs to prove himself. Playing with his countrymen this summer could be a good break from the pressures of club soccer.
Norway is not expected to go far in the World Cup this summer as it is their first tournament in 28 years. If his team has an early exit, then Odegaard will be fresh for Arsenal's defense of their title next season.
